STRANDZHA REGION
The region of Strandzha Mountain is an enchanting world where the silence and beauty reign. In the region of Strandzha Mountain the oldest protected territory in Bulgaria – the Silkosia reserve is situated. This is the only place in whole Europe where the symbol of mountain grows – the periwinkle plant. There are many picturesque recesses where you can enjoy a real recreation among the thicket of the cool and fresh mountain forests. This Bulgarian mountain saved many cultural monuments from the times of ancient Thracians. If you are a real admirer of the country and ecological tourism do not miss to visit the picturesque small villages of Strandzha region such as Brashlyan, Bulgari, Fakia, Momina Tsarkva, Zvezdets, Gramatikovo where the rich Bulgarian lifestyle, culture and history are still alive. The very special accent in the spiritual culture of Strandzha region is the peculiar ritual and religion system, expressed in the quiet co-existence of Christianity and ancient pagan customs. This is the unique area where dancing over glowing embers can be seen, the dance is called nestinarstvo /fire-dancing/ and is one of the ancient pagan customs of Balkan region – a bridge connecting the past with the future, representing a little fragment of the cultural heritage of our nation. This is something unique and almost unknown, despite it has existed in the heart of Europe for centuries. This phenomenon has not been revealed yet – a mystery raising a lot of questions still unanswered. Sakar Mountain impresses with the beauty of its wild nature and the great variety of animals and plants. This is one of the regions where the greatest populations of birds of prey, enlisted in the Red book of protected species inhabit. The highest point of mountain is Vishegrad peak – 856.3 m high, and the lowest one is the Toklu Dere /gully/ water reflux – 45 m. An interesting monument of culture here is the Ustremski monastery bearing the name of the Holy Trinity also called Haydushki. The wealthy cultural and historical heritage, antic structures and wondrous beautiful nature create wonderful opportunities for the development of mountain, ecological and cultural tourism. |
