THE DANUBE REGION
The Danube region stretches between the Danube river. In the west it starts from the river Timok, and reaches the Black Sea coastline to the east. Its width in the western part is 20 km, and in the east it exceeds 120 km.
The terrain of the region is hilly and has a rather various geographic appearance, with the average altitude above sea-level being 178 m and has expressive continental climate. The Danube region is rich in fertile agricultural land and takes up an independent place in the cultural and historical development of Bulgaria and the Balkan Peninsula. The Danube plain is part of this region. Many rivers flow through it and their springs begin in the very plain; others start in the North Balkan and Stara Planina. Only the river Iskar rises far in the south in the high belt of Rila. On the territory of the Danube plain, north of the city of Varna is situated the temple of Kibella. It is about two thousand and five hundred years old and it is the oldest in continental Europe. The Basarbovo monastery, which is the only operational rock monastery in Bulgaria, is also located in the Danube plain. In 1953 in the Balana locality, east of Lukovit a silver treasure was found, dated from the second part of 4 c. BC. An interesting sight is the Sveshtari tomb, a discovery providing rich information about the everyday life of the population in the region of modern North Bulgaria. The unique combination of natural resources – water, forests and fertile soil have attracted people and made them settle in this place from antiquity to present day. From times immemorial the Shoumen plateau has been closely connected with the life of the local people. The natural park combines natural beauty, history and cultural heritage of the region all in one. Dobrudzha is a hilly region located in the northeastern part of the Danube plain. People call Dobrudzha “Bulgaria’s granary” because of its vast wheat fields. The region of Ludogorie encompasses the Ludogorsko plateau, situated in northeastern Bulgaria. It is characterized by rich cultural and historical heritage and places for recreation and tourism in the nature. The unique natural reserve Srebarna is located in the Danube region. It is on the Danube river, about 16 km west of Silistra and is characterized by the fact that it is the most important migration route of migratory birds between Northern Europe and Central Afrika. The microclimate, flora, fauna and the other conditions in Srebarna make it a paradise for ornitologists and the object of scientific observation and research. There is a museum and an ecology station of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in the reserve. In 1975 Srebarna was included in the Ramsar convention for protecting wetlands of international importance. In 1977 the natural park was declared a biospheric reserve from the list of UNESCO. In 1983 it enters the list of monuments of the world cultural heritage and natural landmarks of UNESCO.
